From fluency to mastery: Empowering Confident, Capable Mathematicians

At Gladesville Primary School, our focus is on building automaticity with foundational skills to help students develop confidence as they tackle more complex mathematical problems.

We explicitly teach key concepts and skills to support students in becoming capable, independent mathematicians. At Gladesville PS, we know that with a strong grasp of the basics, students are better able to engage with and enjoy all areas of mathematics.

We employ Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) as our core pedagogical approach. In mathematic this method involves breaking down complex mathematical concepts into manageable steps, providing clear explanations, and guiding students through practice with immediate feedback.

Our mathematics curriculum is designed to ensure consistency across the school, with all students engaging in sequential content. This ensures that every student has access to high-quality instruction.

To reinforce learning and promote retention, we incorporate daily review sessions that revisit previously taught concepts. This practice supports the development of automaticity in basic skills, enabling students to confidently tackle more complex problems
